  2. from 1984, following his mother Indira
  3. Gandhi's assassination, to Nov 1989. As prime
  4. minister, he faced growing discontent with
  5. his party's elitism and lack of concern for
  6. social issues. Rajiv Gandhi initially
  7. displayed little interest in politics and
  8. became an airline pilot. But after the death
  9. in a plane crash of his brother Sanjay
  10. (1946-80), he was elected to his brother's
  11. Amethi parliamentary seat 1981. In the Dec
  12. 1984 parliamentary elections he won a record
  13. majority. In 1985 he reached a temporary
  14. settlement with the moderate Sikhs which
  15. failed, however, to hold. His reputation was
  16. tarnished by a scandal concerning alleged
  17. kickbacks to senior officials from an arms
  18. deal with the Swedish munitions firm Bofors
  19. and, following his party's defeat in the
  20. general election of Nov 1989, Gandhi was
  21. forced to resign as premier.
